Sophie Scholl, pray for us!

Sophie, along with her brother, Hans, and a number of their friends, formed The White Rose, a group resisting and campaigning against the Nazi regime during World War II. They were college students at the University of Munich, motivated by Christian writers as far-ranging as St. Augustine and St. John Henry Newman.

Much of their work involved writing and secretly distributing leaflets pleading their fellow Germans to see and resist the evil around them. From their first leaflet:

“Isn't it true that every honest German is ashamed of his government these days? Who among us has any conception of the dimensions of shame that will befall us and our children when one day the veil has fallen from our eyes and the most horrible of crimes—crimes that infinitely outdistance every human measure—reach the light of day?”

Sophie Scholl was executed on February 22, 1943. Let us remember and emulate her courage.
